The Mara Group secured its place in history by becoming the first purely African smartphone manufacturer. This week she presented two models - Mara X and Mara Z. According to Rwandan President Paul Kagame, this is a huge step for the country and the entire continent.
Both smartphones are budgetary, with a minimum set of characteristics, the main difference between the models is only in the amount of memory - 16 GB for the Mara X and 32 for the Mara Z. They run Android and are even more expensive than the popular Tecno devices in the country. The Mara X will cost $ 130 and the Mara Z $ 190. But the Rwandans are justly proud of their achievement - they have mastered the full production cycle, from creating printed circuit boards to developing their own applications.
There are already several factories for assembling gadgets in Africa, in South Africa, Egypt and Algeria. But they all operate on imported off-the-shelf components, while new laboratories and production facilities for the Mara Group are under construction in the capital of Rwanda, Kigali. Rwanda has the status of a leader in economic innovation on the continent, so it's easy to imagine that owning smartphones is just the beginning.
