Latest Intel laptop processors break 5 GHz mark for the first time

Gaming laptop makers have rushed to embrace the new 10th generation Intel Core H series chips. Previously, they were only available for desktop PCs, but now you can evaluate what a processor with a frequency of above 5 GHz is capable of on a mobile device. Intel believes there will be at least a hundred new gaming laptop models with Comet Lake-H chips this year.

The lineup traditionally includes three classes of processors. The top Intel Core i9 runs at 5.3 GHz, has 8 cores and supports 16 threads. In the middle is the i7 chip, which can have 6 or 8 cores and a maximum frequency of 5.1 GHz. The lower class is i5, with 4 cores and a frequency of 4.6 GHz. However, the true indicators are somewhat different and entirely depend on the fine tuning of the chips during operation.

Intel has prepared an impressive set of tools for Comet Lake-H. Speed Optimizer and Extreme Tuning Utility are official utilities for overclocking the chip. Thermal Velocity Boost balances temperature and power consumption. Adaptix Dynamic Tuning manages the fans to keep the chip warm and prevent it from shutting down. Intel Turbo Boost Max 3.0 checks the cores and redirects tasks to those that are currently capable of running at maximum speed.
