Indonesian company wants to replace plastic with edible seaweed packaging

Evoware has launched an initiative that can solve many of the problems of the state of Indonesia at once. It is the second largest plastic pollutant in the World Ocean - Indonesians dump 90% of all packaging material into the sea. And here are the largest seaweed farms in the world, but these products are not in high demand to lift farmers out of poverty.

Evoware suggests not trying to immediately tackle global problems and abandoning plastic. Instead, they developed two kinds of seaweed-based materials - primitive, cheap, akin to disposable fast food packaging. You can't make a chair or a computer case out of such a substance, but it can easily replace the most common type of plastic: packaging.

The first material is intended for use with non-food products, and its main property is that it is completely biodegradable. This is a bonus for the manufacturer who does not need to think about what will happen to the packaging of his goods after the purchase. And the second material, on the contrary, is edible. You can bite off the sandwich without opening the package, the tea bag itself will dissolve in boiling water, it is enough to throw the package of noodles into the pan to get a portion of vitamins and minerals from the seafood. At the same time, the packaging has a neutral taste "not like seaweed."

More than 250 million people live in Indonesia who need a lot of food and the same amount of packaging for it - the algae farms will work at an accelerated pace and will be enriched. A portion of food will become cheaper, or the customer will get more calories for the same money, eating and packaging. The volume of waste will decrease dramatically, the burden on the environment will decrease, the living conditions for people will improve and the cultivation of even more beneficial algae will be improved. And then - export to the vast Asian market and a very real article of national export.
