The first such an unusual natural phenomenon was discovered by one of the helicopter crews of the Nadym squadron. Soon the whole country learned about the find. At present, a whole scientific expedition is engaged in the study of the crater on behalf of the Governor of the Yamal-Nenets Okrug.
The main mystery that scientists still cannot solve is the origin of the mysterious crater. Its inner and outer diameters are 40 and 60 meters, respectively. In the journalistic environment, he has already been nicknamed "the navel of the Earth." Apparently, there is a lot of work ahead.
So far, it has only been possible to carry out a binding in space and start installing scientific equipment inside the crater. According to the member of the expedition, Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences Marina Leibman, the Yamal crater is clearly not a man-made phenomenon. The meteoric nature of its origin also seems unlikely, since there are no traces of charring. Most likely, there was a rock release under the influence of bog gas.
Andrey Plekhanov, representing the Center for Arctic Studies, agrees with his colleague's opinion. In his opinion, the crater is significantly different from the karst sinkholes, which are quite numerous in Yamal. However, there is no mysticism here. It's just that scientists have to reveal another mystery of nature.
