Deep brain stimulation will quickly relieve severe depression

Published the results of a 12-month study conducted at the University of Freiburg in Germany and the hospital of the University of Bonn. Scientists wanted to understand the potential of using deep electrical brain stimulation to treat diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and depression. And in the latter case, unexpectedly, amazing results were obtained!

The subjects were 16 patients with chronic severe depression who underwent drug, psychiatric and electroconvulsive therapy, but to no avail. All of them underwent stimulation of the medial forebrain bundle, widely accepted as a key component in the reward neurosystem. Thin electrodes were implanted into living tissue to deliver weak currents directly to the specified area of the brain.

All subjects showed a reduction in depression symptoms in response to treatment, with 10 of 16 patients showing significant declines within the first week. By the end of the study, half of the subjects had a threshold level of depression - in fact, they were healed of it. And scientists have good reason to believe that this result will persist for a long time - quite possibly, for years to come. It can be called a sensation - after many years of suffering, people were cured in a matter of days.

In parallel, physiologists opened up a new area for research - the effect of electric current on the orbitofrontal cortex of the brain turned out to be a powerful tool for influencing the mood of patients. And this is probably not all, you need to continue to search for areas in the brain, a careful impact on which can radically change human behavior. And to save him from the problems with which many people "grew together" and have already despaired of being cured.
